Contemporary Living Room Transformation

Contemporary Living Room Transformation

When we began working with this client on their living room and foyer spaces, we were essentially given a blank slate. There were no architectural details built into the original structure of the spaces, meaning the room had no designated focal points or features.

The client’s main request was that we incorporate a fireplace into the design so we chose to make it the focal point of the space. Instead of opting for a traditional mantel however, we turned the fireplace into a beautiful brick feature wall, providing the architectural detailing that the room originally lacked.

To update the look and feel of the home, and to create consistent flooring between the two spaces we replaced the carpet in the living room and existing hardwoods in the foyer space (golden oak finish and 2” plank size were dated) with new hardwood floors and added a cozy area rug. Client wanted a dark wood contemporary finish on the floor so we installed new 4-1/2” plank refinished hardwood floors.

In an effort to keep remodeling costs to a minimum, we decided not to tear out and change the handrail and metal spindles (which also had a dated design and finish), but instead chose to refinish both the exposed wood on the stairs and the handrail to match the finish on the new wood floors and keep the existing metal spindles. The refinishing was a painstaking and tedious process but it turned out great! It even updated the look of the metal spindles. All in all, it saved the client thousands of dollars and was well worth the effort.

In the foyer area, we added two benches under the console table. While these benches are stylish (client loved the unique shape of the design), they also provide functionality as additional seating in the living room when needed. This client loves to decorate and wanted to find some accessories on her own. So we gave her guidelines on what to look for (shapes & sizes) and she found the beautiful mirror to complete the look in the foyer.

The client wanted to incorporate white furniture into the design so we went with a light color palette and complimented the room with silver accents to fit the client’s contemporary, chic style. We chose a performance fabric for the furniture that doesn’t absorb spills, allowing for easy cleaning. While this fabric is a little more costly, it provides the durability and longevity to make the investment worth it. The client opted for a room darkening window treatment, in roman shade style, to allow for light during the day and privacy at night.

Our team delivered and created a beautiful space that exceeded the expectations of our client.
